Simulacra

We’ve evolutionarily adapted to a certain state of reality. If something does not fit into that model, it goes into the unknown box, and the outcome is anyone’s guess.

But if something is a simulacra - a simulated version of something real - you can be sure it will throw off the natural balance. It’s pretending to be something it’s not.

Fruit candy will trick you into consuming it, but provide none of the fiber, vitamins and nutrients. So the outcome is not what you’ve adapted to thrive on.

You “are” literally that which has been selected by reality. Otherwise, something else would be “been”. A simulacra of reality will not result in harmony of your being.

Could the simulacra become the new reality, you say? Yes. But you as is would not be adapted to it. And there’s something to be said of a reality constructed by the human mind, versus the infinite elegance of the universe. The former is a subset of the latter. The universe encodes much more than our typical constructions, and creates via feedback loops and interactions that produce equilibria. Just try interacting with the physical world versus a piece of human software on your computer to see the difference.

Our harmony can be thrown off by anything artificial - not just food. You’ve evolved around social interactions that take place in person, at a certain pace, at a certain scale. So if you’re on social media, you’re getting cues to be in social mode. You’re inclined to consume, and to put in the cost of attention. Yet you’re getting none of the nutrients: the in-person oxytocin, a rate of information you can process (or higher quality bandwidth but at a slower pace). You’re paying the cost without the benefit.

At the end of the day, reality is dynamic, and humans have evolved to create things and interact with them. But be conscious of how far you stray from your nature, if you seek harmony. That, is a tautology.
